Why go solar? If you ask most people, they’ll tell you it’s because sunlight is a clean, renewable form of energy which won’t harm the planet. Using solar energy means that we’re not using as much fossil fuel, so we’re reducing our carbon emissions. But when you consider the big picture, your personal contribution makes very little difference to the overall rate at which such fuels are being burned. Is it really worth making the effort when there’s no guarantee that other people will do the same? The answer is yes. Individual efforts by individual households may not seem like much, but when you put them together, they really add up. The US government is currently trying to persuade one million of its citizens to install solar panels on their roofs. If this can be achieved, as many as five coal-fired power stations can be shut down for good. Imagine how much damage a single power station can do, pumping out dirt into the atmosphere on a continual basis, damaging the health of those who live around it, and you’ll really begin to understand what solar energy as alternative power is about. Closing those plants won’t cost jobs, as those laid off can easily be re-employed in the solar industry. What it will do is to enable the clean-up of polluted communities and wasted land. It’ll mean that cities no longer suffocate under blankets of smog and it’ll spare children from having to grow up with asthma. All this if one million people come together to make a difference. You could be one of those million. solar energy as alternative power can open up a bright new future for all of us. Your individual contribution may be a big thing for you and a small thing on the grand scale, but it is far from unimportant. It’s people like you who can change the future, and not just by setting an example - by having a direct impact on quality of life for hundreds of thousands of people here and now. Do your bit, and one day you’ll be able to look back and say you changed the world.
